This product seems to have been designed specifically for the iPad with Camera Connection Kit (CCK) to pass high definition audio to an external DAC. I confirmed that it converts 24x96 audio to Coax without the need for a powered USB hub. Combined with a portable DAC/headphone amp (I use the FiiO E17), it provides an elegant portable high-definition audio capability.

The product description doesn't mention this, but there is a small blue LED that lights when the unit is powered on.

The only negative I will cite is that the case seems a little loose around the electronics inside. Hopefully this won't provide a longevity problem.
